In this expansion for Dominations: Road to Civilization, you will have the opportunity to conquer and assimilate new territories!
At the beginning of each Age, each player draws a Province card, then takes the corresponding Province tile to be added to their hand. This tile must be placed on the board during the current Age in the Growth Phase, along with a normal Terrain tile. Each player will therefore play six tiles during the Age instead of the usual five. These tiles will have unique illustrations and features: some will have resources, others will have other effects, in the same manner as Monuments do.
Once your Province tile has been placed, you can conquer it. To do this, you'll need a brand new resource: Conquest! Conquest is represented by a set of small Conquest cards that can only be earned in one way: by using one of the new Mastery cards in the expansion, Conscription. This Mastery card is unique because it does not belong to any Domain: it has a value of 3 and can be purchased using any type of Knowledge. It is then used as a converter - changing any type of Knowledge into Conquest cards.
When Conquest cards are purchased, they are drawn from the Conquest card deck, which is placed face down on the table. Each card has a value of 1 to 5 Conquest points, and are drawn at random. In addition, some of these cards have special powers and bonuses.
To conquer a Province, you must pay the corresponding number of Conquest Points, as indicated on the Province card of the tile. However, these Provinces will not be easily conquered. Each Province card also has a "Rebellion" value. This is the deck of Rebellion cards, which - like the Conquest cards - are drawn at random, have a value of 1 to 5.
If you have enough Conquest points, you can then conquer the Province by placing a City Token there and getting the bonus indicated on its card. As with the regular tiles, just because you place a Province Tile does not mean it is yours. Once placed, any player can conquer it!
However, while the tiles MUST be placed during the Age, conquering them is not mandatory. Each Province has an end-of-Age effect, which is triggered if it has not been conquered. These effects can be good or bad, whether they allow you to gain extra resources or unleash hordes of barbarian invaders to destroy nearby cities!
These combinations of different effects bring a fascinating new strategic facet to Dominations. Will you conquer as many Provinces as possible to reap the benefits, or will you simply place the tiles next to your opponents' Cities, forcing them to react to avoid negative end-of-Age effects?
Provinces allows for a slightly more aggressive style of play, as your actions can directly harm your opponents. Moreover, Provinces is the first expansion where your nation can really lose ground: Cities can be destroyed, resources lost.
